A bathhouse in RiNo, Denver

Heat, cold, and nothing else to do.

A wood-fired sauna, a steam room, a warm pool, two cold plunges and a quiet room. Two hours at a time, with your phone in a locker.

See the rooms

Sauna at 194°F, plunges at 39°F.

Five rooms, hottest first.

Follow them down the page the way you’d go round the house: as hot as you like, then as cold as you can stand, then nothing at all.

194°F

The sauna

  • Wood-fired
  • Fourteen seats
  • Löyly on the half hour

A Finnish sauna with a wood stove and three tiers of cedar benches. Sit high if you can take it, low if you can’t. Every half hour one of us pours water on the stones and moves the steam around with a towel. It is better than it sounds.

118°F

The steam room

  • Full humidity
  • Eucalyptus
  • Whispers only

Tiled, dim and so thick with steam you can lose the person next to you. Eucalyptus in the air, cool water at the tap. Lower heat than the sauna, and somehow harder to leave.

102°F

The warm pool

  • Salt water
  • Shallow
  • Built for floating

A shallow salt-water pool at bath temperature, open to the courtyard. It is where the round gets easy: lie back, let the salt hold you up, and watch the steam come off the water on a cold night.

39°F

The cold plunges

  • Two cedar tubs
  • Bucket shower
  • Two minutes is plenty

Two cedar tubs kept at 39°F and a bucket shower for the brave. In up to the shoulders, breathe out long and slow. The first ten seconds are the worst ten seconds.

Breathe
out.

Two minutes is plenty. It gets easier at about forty seconds.

72°F

The quiet room

  • Loungers & blankets
  • Tea bar
  • Mountain view

Loungers, wool blankets, a tea bar and a long window facing the Front Range. Nobody talks in here. Lie down, drink something, and let your heart rate come back to you.

That was one round. Now do it three times.

Heat opens you up, cold shuts you down, and the rest is where it all lands. A round takes about half an hour. Most people do three and leave lighter than they came.
